BHE Programme

It is a matter of immense pleasure to inform you that Indian Institute of Health and Family Welfare (IIHFW), an apex healthcare institute of A.P. State, has ventured into the domain of education for the first time ever through a one-of-a-kind Bachelor of Health Education (BHE) degree programme. BHE is a one-year postgraduation degree programme affiliated to Osmania University, Hyderabad. The objective of the BHE program is to develop a cadre of professional health educators and health communicators to effectively plan, implement, monitor and evaluate health education interventions in the wider communities and healthcare centres. The BHE programme is styled along the lines of BEd programme.

There are five courses each in the two semesters. The first semester deals with 1) Basic Health Sciences 2) Epidemiology 3) Social and Behavioural Sciences 4) Health Education and 5) Research Methodology and Statistics. The second semester deals with 1) Health communication 2) Health Demography 3) National Health Polices & Programmes 4) Reproductive & Child Health and 5) Personality Development. The practical part of learning comprises computer skills, concurrent field work and supervisory project.

The core ingredients of BHE programme would be credit system, grading system, internal assessment, continuous and comprehensive evaluation, project-based learning, mentoring and community participation, all of which are meant to promote higher order thinking, social accountability and professional orientation among the learners. There are five courses each in the two semesters.

A candidate for admission to BHE program needs to be a graduate in any discipline from an university recognized by Association of Indian Universities (AIU). The candidates will be admitted strictly on the basis of merit, strength of academic background and job background. Reservation of seats under various categories of candidates as prescribed by Osmania University will be strictly followed.

Career prospects for BHE pass-outs could be appointments as follows
  • Health educators in block, district and state level organisations
  • Communication officers in area projects
  • Health communication & education faculty in training institutions
  • Media & public relations officers in hospital setups
  • Health communication planners and managers in governmental and non governmental setups

A mix of well-qualified and highly experienced faculty, both internal and guest faculty, will be involved in delivery of this program. A large team of non-teaching staff is available to provide all kinds of assistance and services to the students in order to ensure a supportive and student- friendly learning ambience. IIHFW is well endowed with excellent infrastructure and facilities like state-of-the-art hostel building, hostel mess, media lab, AC computer lab, library, AC auditorium, spacious class rooms, AC seminar halls, vehicles for field tours, power back-up generator etc. The first batch of the BHE Course has been launched in september 2008 with a strength of 38 students. Out of the 38 students 25 belong to in-service catagory in the remaining 13 are non-service catagory i.e freshers. The first batch of the course was inagurated by the erstwhile Honourbale Minister for Health and Family Welfare Mr Sambhani Chandrasekhar at a small function presided over by the Director of the Institute Mr Anil Punetha, IAS.
