IIHFW undertakes research and provides consultancy to the department of Medical, Health and Family Welfare, GoAP. Sponsored research leading to evidence based conclusions assumes a high profile in the Institute. The Institute focuses on subjects where best practices and innovative ideas made a difference and disseminates such successes. The research undertaken becomes an essential input in the other activities of the Institute such as training and consultancy.

The Institute provided crucial inputs towards development of India's first ever AP State Population Policy. The Population projections developed by the Institute were extensively used to set targets in the area of Demography, Health and Family Welfare and the ‘Andhra Pradesh Vision 2020 document’.

Data generated by the Institute in the form of various research studies like Eligible Couple (EC) Survey, RCH Baseline Survey, etc., were extensively used in the preparation of the annual NRHM Project Implementation Plan document.
